The Autodesk Construction Cloud Perspective Part 4: The Data Exchange
In parts 1, 2, and 3 in this series, we explored this topic from architectural, civil, and construction viewpoints. Now, in Part 4, we are bringing these perspectives together.
The greatest challenge for many owners and their project teams in today’s digital ecosystem is to create a more collaborative, efficient, and data-driven workflow that carries through the entire project lifecycle.
The Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) provides a suite of integrated tools to facilitate more collaborative and efficient project delivery for owners, stakeholders and the entire project team across the lifecycle of a project. It can integrate the various stakeholders and workflows to deliver more streamlined and collaborative project delivery.
The different components of the ACC construction cloud ecosystem could be integrated to create a more streamlined and collaborative construction process.
Shared, Controlled Data
ACC Features: Permissions, Bridge
A shared, but controlled, data workflow sets the foundation, ensuring the right people have access to the right project information and files, thereby enabling effective real-time communication, collaboration and coordination. The Permissions feature lets all project members control who can view and interact with their project data. Utilizing tools like Bridge further allows all users to share copies of project data, such as models, drawings, and documents, with other stakeholders even when parties are using different software or systems..
Right Hands, Right Time
ACC Features: Insight, Correspondence
Providing visibility into due dates, status, and accountability for tasks and communications. Tools like Correspondence allow project teams to track issues, requests, and approvals directly within the project context, with assigned due dates and statuses so everyone is aware of expected response times and is held accountable. The Automated Reporting and Notifications feature then proactively informs stakeholders of upcoming deadlines or outstanding items, keeping the project on track.
Build Right First Time
ACC Features: Model Coordination, Issues
The ACC Model Coordination capabilities allow the design team to virtually validate the constructability of the project before physical construction begins by bringing the various design models (architectural, structural, MEP, etc.) into a single coordinated model. By identifying and resolving clashes or issues in the digital model, the team can “build it right the first time,” minimizing rework and delays in the field, thus controlling and reducing specific aspects of risk.
The Issues tracking feature further documents identified problems or design changes within the model, assigning responsibility and due dates for resolving these issues. It’s a clear audit trail of how issues were addressed and incorporated back into the design.
These tools help minimize rework and ensures a smoother transition to the final “Life Cycle Handover” workflow.
Life Cycle Handover
ACC Features: Build, Pype, Tandem
Transitioning project data and assets from the construction phase to facility management and operations has long been a paper-driven endeavor. A cloud-based solution such as ACC is the ideal environment to ensure the development of a comprehensive digital twin of the completed project that can be seamlessly handed over to the owner or facility management team.
Three key tools in ACC help facilitate this effort:
Pype is a cloud-based construction project management tool that is designed to automate critical construction workflows such as submittals and closeouts to increase productivity, track scope creep, and mitigate project risk. It ensures the handover package is structured and formatted in a way that is easily digestible and usable by the facility management team.
Autodesk Tandem is a cloud-based digital twin solution which enables collaboration across the AECO industry. It leverages building information modeling (BIM) data to provide the facility owner and operator with a clear virtual representation of the completed building that accurately reflects the as-built conditions. Through this tool, facility managers can visualize, analyze and interact with the asset in a digital environment.
Autodesk Build provides a toolset for managing, sharing, and accessing project documents that results in streamlined workflows between the office, trailer, and jobsite. It lets users track the quality and safety of the project with issues and forms. It catalogues and documents all the individual building components, equipment, and systems that make up the completed project. Furthermore, it enables the linking of relevant information to each asset, such as specifications, warranties, maintenance schedules, and installation details. Through this solution, asset data is organized and accessible for ongoing operations and maintenance.
By focusing on a thorough and organized handover process, the architect and contractor are able to provide the owner or facility management team with a complete, up-to-date digital record of the project.
