Infrastructure Universe, Vol. 2: Important Updates from Autodesk
Happy holidays! This month’s Infrastructure Update is all about Civil 3D. Here are some new tools that were released between the official versions of Civil 3D 2015, 2016, and 2017. This time, I’ve tried to include videos of some of the new features, so don’t forget to check those out! Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2017 v1 Enhancements
Released: 2 months ago (you must have the Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 Service Pack 1.1 installed before installing this enhancement)
Add Property Set Data to Labels – Add custom data to AutoCAD Civil 3D object labels by using property sets.
Swap Pressure Network Parts – Swap pressure network pipes, fittings, and appurtenances with parts of another size or type. This utility enables you to select parts from either the current network parts list or from a part catalog.
Analyze Gravity Network – This utility enables you to resize pipes and reset inverts and to compute the energy and hydraulic grade lines according to HEC-22 2009 standards. You can use this utility to:
- Iteratively analyze a network using appropriate rainfall data
- Review results graphically and in a .csv file
- Modify the results and re-run the analysis
- Apply the results to the pipe network
Updated Functionality and Content
The following features from earlier productivity packs have been updated so they can be installed and work with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017.
Subassemblies – A set of subassemblies is included in this release, including subassemblies for benches, curbs, ditches, shoulders, tunnels, and single-track and double-track railways. Note: After installing AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017 v1 Enhancements, you will need to import the PKT files into a Tool Palette to access them.
Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator – Translate AutoCAD Civil 3D files to files that can be used in Bentley®GEOPAK® and Bentley® InRoads®, and translate GEOPAK and InRoads files to files that can be used in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
Create 3D Solids from Pipe Networks – Create AutoCAD Solids from AutoCAD Civil 3D pipe networks and pressure networks.
Rail Turnouts and Crossings commands – Create and edit rail turnouts and crossovers.
Traverse Editor – Use the Traverse Editor to input and edit traverse data. Create points, lines, and curves representing traverse legs and sideshots using COGO input and editing tools. The traverse can be used to generate a polyline, COGO points, and a TRV2 traverse file which you can open in the Traverse Adjustment dialog box and apply an adjustment method.
Traverse Adjustment – Use the Traverse Adjustment feature to apply an adjustment method to traverse data. Perform traverse adjustments and generate reports using Compass, Transit, Crandall, and Grant Line adjustment methods, and update COGO points and traverse geometry within the drawing.
Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2016 Productivity Pack 1

Autodesk Civil Engineering Data Translator – Translates AutoCAD Civil 3D files to files that can be used in Bentley® GEOPAK® and Bentley® InRoads®, and translates GEOPAK and InRoads files to files that can be used in AutoCAD Civil 3D
Rail Turnouts and Crossings – Creates and edits rail turnouts and crossovers.
Coordinate Geometry Editor – Creates and adjusts traverses.
Earthwork Plan Production – Create a grid of labels that annotate differences in volume between surfaces.
3D Solids from Pipe Networks – Create AutoCAD 3D solids from pipes and structures.
Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2016 Productivity Pack 2
Released: Jan 19, 2016. This productivity pack requires that AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 SP2 (or later) be installed.
- Ability for AutoCAD Civil 3D users to more efficiently extract corridor feature lines that remain dynamic to the corridor. This includes selection control of feature lines that will be generated as well as control over appearance, style, name, and curvature.
- Ability for users to define property sets that are used to add intelligence to AutoCAD Civil 3D objects and AutoCAD entities. This metadata can be used within AutoCAD Civil 3D or in other applications you use in your workflow including Autodesk® Navisworks® and Autodesk® BIM 360™ Glue®.
Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2016 Productivity Pack 3

Traverse Editor – Create points, lines, and curves representing traverse legs and sideshots using a broad set of COGO input and editing tools. The traverse can be used to generate polylines, COGO points, and a .TRV2 traverse file.Note that this new tool provides significant improvements over the COGO Editor that was included in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 Productivity Pack 1.
Traverse Adjustment – Perform traverse adjustment and generate reports using Compass, Transit, Crandall, and Grant Line adjustment methods. Update COGO points and traverse geometry within the drawing.
Subassemblies – A new library of subassemblies is included that you can integrate into your projects. All of this content was created in Autodesk Subassembly Composer and can be edited and expanded to meet your individual or organizational needs. Not that there are separate metric and imperial libraries and detailed Help that you can access to learn about the behavior of each subassembly.
Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2015 Productivity Pack 1

Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2015 Productivity Pack 1 consists of the following features:
- Ability for AutoCAD Civil 3D users to directly read Autodesk InfraWorks models for detailed design/production tasks
- Coordinate Geometry Editor utility that provides a streamlined process for point, line, and curve entry and balance
- Automated process for creating AutoCAD 3D solids from Civil 3D surface models and pipe networks (Great for importing into Revit!)
Productivity Tools for Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D 2015

Productivity Tools for Autodesk® AutoCAD® Civil 3D® 2015 software includes a collection of tools and content to support regional or industry-specific workflows that can be downloaded and installed by Civil 3D subscription customers. Each tool is named in way that reflects the region or country that the tool applies, user interface language, OS, and description of the tool.
Autodesk® Civil Engineering Data Translator – The Autodesk® Civil Engineering Data Translator provides users with the ability to share project design data (for example, surfaces, alignments, profiles, points) between AutoCAD Civil 3D and legacy civil software environments.
Autodesk® Extension for Civil View – The Autodesk® Extension for Civil View is intended to be used in conjunction with the existing Export to Civil View for 3ds Max Design option in Civil 3D and provides the ability to add Civil 3D alignment, profile and pipe network data to your Civil View model in Autodesk® 3ds Max Design.
Autodesk® Import-Export Extension for GENIO – The Autodesk® Import-Export Extension for GENIO streamlines the migration of data from Bentley® MXROAD® software to Civil 3D software. It also enables customers to use Civil 3D on projects that require Bentley MXROAD format deliverables and/or the use GENIO or binary “modelfile” format as data sources.
Autodesk® Microdrainage Utility – The Autodesk® Microdrainage Utility2015 provides the ability for AutoCAD® Civil 3D® Pipe Networks to be renamed and exported to SWS/FWS format for analysis within System 1 and then imported to update the pipe network in AutoCAD® Civil 3D® to create a 3D model of drainage network as well as product plans, sections and pipe and structure schedules.
Autodesk® Shared Reference Point – The Autodesk® Shared Reference Point provides functionality to export known points and elevation from AutoCAD Civil 3D to an external file, in which Revit can import and setup a ‘Shared Coordinate System’. This enables the collaboration of exported RVT, DWG and NWC files back to AutoCAD Civil 3D and to coordinate models in Autodesk Navisworks.
